Heart Health And Your Lifestyle

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in America? Or that the epidemic of obese and overweight children in the US has greatly alarmed the American Heart Association because of the implications that go along with it? Many cases of heart disease would have never developed if only people had taken the time to learn about the importance of good nutrition and exercise, and share their findings with their families.

Heart health begins at home. What you eat plays a big role in how healthy your cardiac system is. A diet than is considered as “normal” by most people in America is in fact called a “Western” diet by the rest of the world. People in other countries are taught to avoid this diet at all costs! Why? Because our typical diet consists of red meat, foods fried in deep fat, and processed foods that are full of salt. Americans as a whole do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Research proves that if they did consume the needed five servings a day, the country's incidence of heart disease would not be as severe as it is.

How can we improve our heart health? The so-called “prudent” diet, containing five or more servings of fruits and vegetables, can cut your risk of a heart attack by thirty percent. Along with the fruits and vegetables, a diet that is low in fat and high in fibre will do wonders to improve your chances for heart health.

It's easy to see that a diet of fast food can be detrimental to your heart health! That said, there are five foods and beverages that you and everyone in your family should make an effort to consume every single day. Oranges, or orange juice if you must, dark leafy greens, bran cereal, yogurt, and green tea. All of these foods and beverages have amazing disease prevention properties, and their variety will ensure that you get a wide range of nutrients that will contribute to your heart health.
